---
Serenity and the adjective serene stem from the Latin serenitatem (nominative serenitas) by way of the French sérénité. The term was originally used in the 16th century to describe the weather.

One of the most well-known uses of this expression is in the Serenity Prayer, an originally untitled prayer by 20th American theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr. The prayer has been adopted by Alcoholics Anonymous and other twelve-step programs. The first verse offers this profound advice:

God, give me grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.
