segue verb
- to move easily and without interruption from one piece of music, part of a story, subject, or situation to another
noun - any smooth, uninterrupted transition from one thing to another.
(Cambridge Dictionary)
--- Coming from the Italian noun segue, which means "now follows" the word has been used since the mid-1700s. Originally it referred to passages in a song or in a melody.
A few hundred years later, it was used for conversations that flowed smoothly from one topic to the next.
Only much later, in the 1900s, did it become a verb (Tony segued from talking about the budget to staff cuts)
The word "sequel", to refer to an event that follows, is actually a few hundred years older, however, when hearing the word, many of us think of a television show or film (How many Star Wars sequels can they make?)
A Segway is the name of the two-wheeled personal transport that was developed around 2000. The idea of smooth transition led the inventor to choose the word segue, but change the spelling.
Notice, however, that segue is pronounced "seg way" and sequel is spoken as "seek well".
