WORD ORIGIN

Second nature is a habit or behaviour that is practiced so long that it becomes instinct (Driving in heavy traffic is second nature to him).

This expression is a shortened form of an ancient proverb first recorded in 1390: "Custom (or usage) is a second nature" It alludes to the fact that repeating something often enough will one day make it seem completely natural or inborn.

A similar phrase is "a force of habit." This means someone does something automatically without thinking about it because they have done it so often before. And if this is a difficult habit to stop, then try to "kick the habit." This is often used when talking about unhealthy habits like drinking, smoking, overeating or drugs (I've been a two-pack-a-day smoker for 30 years. I think it's time I kick the habit.)

There are also some things in life that while unpleasant, they can't be avoided. In this case, it's just "the nature of the beast" (The stock markets have been unstable for weeks. It's the nature of the beast). And instead of trying to do something about it, sometimes it's better to relax and "let nature take its course."
