--- To the uninitiated, American football (and rugby for that matter) at first glance seems like mere chaos. There is some truth to this observation. In fact, in the mid-19th century when scrimmage was first applied to American and rugby football, it was used in the sense of "a confused struggle between players." One could argue that both games have evolved to a sort of controlled chaos that can be understood only by those who know the rules.
Scrimmage is a chiefly American expression that refers to a confrontation or battle, either literally or figuratively. The expression is mainly used in the world of sports however. It describes a practice session in which a team's players face off against each to simulate a real game. While it mainly applies to American football, scrimmage also describes simulated or practice games in basketball and other team sports.
Another related expression is the "line of scrimmage," which refers to an imaginary line at which the opposing football teams line up against each other before each play begins.
The term scrimmage is from the late 16th century and is an alteration of "skirmish" (a minor battle in war). Skirmish evolved from the Old French "escarmouche" (to fence) and the Italian "scaramuccia," which literally means a "small and fast battle."
