--- WORD ORIGIN
A screenplay, also called a script, is an outline for producing a motion picture. It contains the dialogue and a description of each scene. It can be adapted from a previous work or it can be an original work. Every year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hands out Oscars in both Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay categories.
A script for a television program is sometimes called a teleplay. Someone who writes screenplays is a screenwriter. Screenwriters are generally unknown outside of the industry. However, talented screenwriters are highly respected within the industry.
Screenplays for feature films are roughly 90 to 120 pages long. The general guideline is that each page should about one minute of screen time. Screenplays can be written either on "spec" or as assignments. Assignments are commissioned by production companies or studios.
Spec scripts are written independently by screenwriters with the aim of selling them to producers or studios. Sample scripts are not (usually) intended for production, but to showcase the writing skills of the screenwriter. Once a studio has purchased a script, it goes through a revision process until all parties involved are satisfied and ready to proceed.
Oscar trivia: The legendary British director Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar. He was nominated for best director six times at the Academy Awards between 1941 and 1961 for classic thrillers like Psycho and Rear Window, but was never chosen.
