WORD ORIGIN

Scrappage is the noun form of the verb scrap, meaning "to discard as worthless or sell to be reused as parts; junk."

Scrap is also a noun that refers to 1) a small piece, bit or fragment and 2) discarded waste material, especially metal suitable for reprocessing.

Although vehicle scrappage has been around as long the automobile itself, the term "scrappage" hasn't been a household word; at least until the financial crisis of 2008/2009. The term has rapidly entered everyday language since many countries have implemented so-called scrappage schemes that reward people for scrapping their "old bangers" and buying a new car (apart from slang for a sausage in British English, banger also refers to an old car in bad condition).

Scrappage incentives have been implemented for other things such as household appliances for instance. One of the most unusual examples of scrappage was the Bulgarian farmer who traded in his wife for a goat. According to the London Telegraph, the man was frustrated that his wife could not provide him with a child. He then struck a deal with an acquaintance in front of a speechless crowd at a market in the town of Plovdid.

He justified the scrappage deal by saying, "The day before a friend told me that he has had no luck with women and that he really liked my wife. The deal was reached when my wife gave her approval."

Maybe in this case, the wife was just as happy as the farmer was with the trade.
