A schism is a division between people, usually belonging to an organization, movement, or religious denomination. The word is most frequently applied to a split in what had previously been a single religious body, such as the East–West Schism, which was the split of Chalcedonian Christianity into the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church.

Schism is also used more broadly to describe a split within a non-religious organization or movement or of a separation between two or more people, be it brothers, friends or co-workers.

The word schism stems from the Old French scisme (cleft, split) and the Church Latin schisma. Originally spelled scisme in English, it is traditionally pronounced (szm). However, in the 16th century the word was respelled with an initial sch in order to conform to its Latin and Greek forms. From this spelling arose the pronunciation (skzm).

Long regarded as incorrect, it became so common in both British and American English that it gained acceptability as a standard variant. Evidence indicates that it is now the preferred pronunciation in both British and American English.
