scalable adjective
- used to describe a business or system that is able to grow or to be made larger
(Cambridge Online Dictionaries)
--- Scalable is a popular buzzword that refers to how well something, usually a system, can adapt to increased demands. For example, a scalable computer network system is one that can start with just a few nodes but can easily expand to thousands of nodes. Scalability can be a very important feature because it means that you can invest in a system with confidence you won't outgrow it
In computer systems, the words "scalable," "expandable," and "upgradable" are interchangeable. The scalability of hardware and software is important to growing businesses. After all, it is typically more economical to upgrade current systems than replace them with new ones.
In a broader sense, scalable might describe a facility, plant or unit whose size, performance or number of users can be increased on demand without a penalty in cost or functionality. It can also refer to anything whose size can be changed. For example, a font is said to be scalable if it can be represented in different sizes.
Etymology: scalable, and the root verb "to scale," eventually stems from the Latin "scala," meaning to climb or ascend.
