Did you know?
rumour mill noun phrase
- used to refer to the process by which rumours and gossip are originated and circulated among a group of people
(Oxford English Dictionaries)
--- Rumour (circa 1374) stems from the Old French rumour and French rumeur, meaning "widespread noise or report" and further from the Latin rumor, "noise, clamour, common talk."
The word mill originally referred to a building equipped to grind grain and stems from the Latin "mola" and Late Latin "molina," (related to molere, to grind) which is also the source of the French "moulin" and Spanish "molino." Mill meanwhile can refer to any factory fitted with machinery for a particular manufacturing process.
Like a steel mill with constant output, a rumour mill is a virtual factory that produces a stream of gossip and information. Rumour mills can be local (a small village), proprietary (office environment) or global (the internet).
Rumour mills can also be silly (Apple and McDonalds secretly developing the iBurger), serious (Tension in the Far East as North Korea claims to have a nuclear warhead), costly (Talk of home foreclosures leads to huge sell-off on Wall Street) or pure gossip (Prince Harry celebrates 21st birthday with big bash at posh London disco).
And it goes without saying that rumour mills can affect people on a personal level. As the old Chinese proverb warns, "be careful of rumours because they go in one ear and out many mouths."
