---
Roll, as in roll call, stems from the sense of a piece of paper or document that can be rolled up (scroll) and in this case refers to a list of names. Roll calls are frequently used by government bodies, such as parliaments, when voting on legislation. They are also common in the military and schools as a way of ensuring that everyone is present.

The responsibility for carrying out a roll call can sometimes be a challenge. An army sergeant, who after calling names like Jones, Smith, and Williams, came to the next name on the list and shouted, "Seeback!"

After no answer, he shouted the name louder, "Seeback!" There was still no reply so he screamed at the top of his lungs, "Seeback, where in the hell are you?" Finally the sergeant's assistant whispered in his ear,

"Sergeant, just see the back of the page."
