rocket salad noun phrase
- a salad made with the edible plant Eruca sativa
--- WORD ORIGIN
Rocket salad, or simply rocket, is colloquial for an edible plant with the Latin name Eruca sativa. It is a species of Eruca native to the Mediterranean region, from Morocco and Portugal east to Jordan and Turkey. It has a rich, peppery flavour, and exhibits an exceptionally strong taste for a leafy green plant.
Rocket is generally used in salads, but also cooked as a vegetable with pastas or meats. It is added to the cheese burek in Slovenia. In Italy, it is put on pizza just before the baking period ends or immediately afterwards, so that it won't wilt in the heat. Rocket is sometimes used as an ingredient in pesto, either in addition to basil or as a (non-traditional) substitute.
On the island of Ischia in the Gulf of Naples, a digestive alcohol called rucolino is made from the plant. This liqueur is a local specialty enjoyed in the same way as limoncello or grappa and has a sweet and smooth peppery taste.
In other countries, Eruca sativa is referred to as garden rocket, rocket or rocket salad (British English), arugula (American English), rucola/rugola (Italian), roquette (French), Rokka (Greek) and Roka (Turkish).
