renoviction noun
- when landlords use renovations as a way to raise rents and evict tenants
(New York Times vocabulary blog)
--- Renoviction is a blend of renovate/renovation and evict/eviction (to put out through a legal process). Several instances of renoviction in Vancouver, Canada that gained attention in the press helped to shed light on this practice and give this new term additional publicity.
Blended words, or portmanteaus as they also called, are not new phenomena. Terms such as motel (motor, hotel), camcorder (camera, recorder), brunch (breakfast, lunch) and smog (smoke, fog) are part of our mainstream vocabulary. We no longer think about the fact that they are blended.
English being a lively language, new and inventive portmanteaus appear nearly every week. Below are examples of more modern creations:
- Frankenfood (Frankenstein, food) = genetically-modified food (Critics say there haven't been enough independent studies on the long-term health and environmental consequences of Frankenfood - Wall Street Journal)
- bankster (banker, gangster) = an irresponsible banker or finance professional (Although their corporations have been fined billions for their crimes, not one of the 2007/8 banksters has gone to jail - OpEdNews)
- emoticon (emotion, icon) = an image made up of symbols such as punctuation marks, used in text messages, emails, etc. to express a particular emotion (A team from the University of California-Berkeley analyzed the use of emoticons in Facebook messages - Detroit Free Press)
