A Smashing Rehearsal

Händel was accompanying the singers on a harpsichord during a rehearsal of his opera Flavio one day. The lead tenor was totally irritated by the director's timing and pointedly complained.

"If you can't follow me better than that," the singer exclaimed, "I'll jump on your harpsichord and smash it!"

"Be my guest," Händel replied, "but please let me know when you plan on doing it. I'd like to advertise because more people will come to see you jump than to hear you sing."
