Did you know?
redemption noun
- the action of saving or being saved from sin, error, or evil
- a thing that saves someone from error or evil
- the action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment, or clearing a debt
(Oxford English Dictionary)
--- The English word redemption stems from the Latin redemptionem (nominative redemptio), meaning to buy back or ransom. In the Old Testament of the Bible, redemption referred to the ransom of slaves.
In Christian-based societies, redemption is an element of salvation that broadly means the deliverance from sin. In the New Testament, redemption refers both to the deliverance from sin and freedom from captivity. It is used as a metaphor for what is achieved through the death of Jesus or the price paid for releasing Christians from the bondages of sin and death.
Outside of its religious connotations, redemption - to to redeem oneself - is used in the general sense of doing something good as a means of offsetting a wrong or an error. Let's say you miss a deadline for a report. But the next report you submit is delivered extremely early. If you're lucky, the boss might say, "Nice job. You redeemed yourself!"
