Red Rum
proper noun

- a famous and very popular British race horse, who won many races in the 1970s, including three Grand Nationals

Longman Dictionary

Red Rum was a champion thoroughbred steeplechaser renowned for his jumping ability, having not fallen in 100 races.

He achieved an unmatched historic treble when he won the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977, and also came second in the two intervening years, 1975 and 1976. The Grand National at Aintree is a notoriously difficult race that has been described as “the ultimate test of a horse’s courage”.

After his “retirement” Red Rum returned to Aintree many times to lead the parade of horses before the race.

Red Rum died on 18 October 1995, aged 30. His death was one of the lead items in television news bulletins and also made the front pages of national newspapers the next day.

Besides Red Rum, other famous racehorses have been:

Seabiscuit, Native Dancer, Black Caviar, American Pharoah, Spectacular Bid, Holy Bull, Sunday Silence, War Admiral, Lost in the Fog.

SMUGGLE OWAD into an English conversation, say something like:

“RED RUM is still a household name for most of the UK’s older generation.”

A shout-out to Sabine for suggesting today’s word, the first racehorse to have entered the OWAD archive :-)
