idiom

- ready to fight or compete

---
Rumble likely stemmed from the Middle Dutch" rommelen," Middle High German "rummeln" or Old Norse "rymja" (to shout, roar), which are all of imitative origin. The original noun, referring to a deep, long rolling sound, was first recorded in the 14th century.

The sense of a gang fight, usually involving teenagers, is from 1946, which is where the phrase "ready to rumble" comes from. While the exact origin is unknown, this expression was popularized by Michael Buffer, undoubtedly the world's best known boxing announcer. He distinct style, in which he rolls certain letters and adds other inflections to a fighter's name, is known to boxing fans the world over.

Buffer first used his now trademarked catchphrase "Let's get ready to rumble" in 1984. Since then he has travelled the world to announce at virtually every major boxing event, in addition to other key sporting events like the baseball World Series.

After trademarking the phrase in 1992, he has used it in a variety of licensing deals with companies such as Sony where the famous phrase can be heard on video and Playstation games. The phrase is also used in commercials by companies such as Kraft Foods. Experts estimate Buffer has earned more than $400 million from his licensing contracts.
