- a thin plastic or fibre sheath that is inserted into a hole in masonry in order to hold a screw
(Oxford Dictionary)
--- The rawlplug is an example of a product named after the inventor that eventually becomes so common that it becomes the generic name for the product. In the case of the rawlplug, it was invented by British engineer John Joseph Rawlings in the early 20th century. He trademarked the name in 1912 and changed the name of the company - Rawling Brothers - to Rawlplug Ltd.
Other inventors whose name became the generic description for a product include:
- Rudolf Diesel = the diesel engine
- Christian Doppler = the Doppler radar
- George Washington Gale Ferris = the Ferris wheel
- Richard Jordan Gatling = the Gatling gun
- Hans Geiger = the Geiger counter
- Robert Moog = the Moog synthesizer
- Julias Richard Petri = the Petri dish
- Earl Silas Tupper = Tupperware food containers
- Ferdinand Zeppelin = the Zeppelin
It's interesting to note that diesel is the only word written in lower case, an exception for which there is no explanation.
