pub crawl noun
- a visit to several pubs, one after the other, having a drink or drinks at each one
(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
--- WORD ORIGIN
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term (including variations like "gin crawl" and "beer crawl") has been in use since the late 19th century. Crawl refers to the image of the participants crawling on their hands and knees from pub to pub after having had too much to drink.
Many European cities, including Paris, Berlin and Rome, have public pub crawls that serve as social gatherings for foreign residents. Pub crawls are popular in the United States as well, particularly in working class cities like Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It's no coincidence that all of these cities have large German immigrant populations and a history of brewing beer.
Some pub crawls are organised around a theme. Dublin has one called the Literary Pub Crawl, which takes participants on tours of the favourite pubs of Irish literary stars like James Joyce, Samuel Beckett and Brendan Behan. Professional actors lead the Dublin Literary Pub Crawl and perform selections from the works of Irish writers.
