WORD ORIGIN
Proxy evolved from "proccy" (a letter containing power of attorney) and later "prokecye" (stewardship), which were borrowed from the Anglo-French procuracie and directly from the Medieval Latin procuratia (administration), an alteration of the Latin procuratio (care, management), from procurare (manage).
Proxy is a broad term that refers to something that acts on behalf of something else (people can also be proxies). Proxy is frequently used in the legal profession and in business, although it gets wide use in a variety of contexts. Some of the more common uses are:
proxy fight - A strategy that may be part of a hostile takeover. A proxy fight occurs when the acquiring company attempts to convince shareholders to use their proxy votes to install new management that is open to the takeover.
