WORD ORIGIN
Premonition (ca. 1456) is from the Anglo-French premunition and the Late Latin præmonitio, "a forewarning" (prae=before + monitio=warning).
While human premonitions are well documented, scientists and animal lovers alike believe animals possess this capability as well. There is evidence that some animals can detect earthquake activity before humans recognise the first signs of trembling. But this is usually attributed more to an animal's finely tuned senses than what we think of as a premonition.
Then there is Oscar, a cat that was adopted by a nursing home in Rhode Island in the U.S.Oscar likes to curl up beside patients who are in their final hours. Researchers observed the feline for two years and watched as he lay next to 25 patients who eventually passed away within the next several hours. The nursing home staff now alerts families when Oscar takes his place next to one of the patients. As David Dosa, a Brown University professor who carried out the research, says, "He doesn't make many mistakes. He seems to understand when patients are about to pass away."
