Prank is a 16th century word of uncertain origin. It may be related to the obsolete verb prank, meaning to decorate or dress up. It may also be related to the Low German "prank" (display) and High German "prunken" (to make a show, strut).

A prank, also known as a practical joke, is a mischievous trick or joke played on someone, typically causing them embarrassment, confusion or discomfort. Pranks are generally meant to be harmless, such as the silly whoopee cushions that simulate vulgar bodily noises when they are sat on.

Kids love to play pranks. I well remember leaving an anonymous note for our teacher: "Dear Miss Buchan, Please call back Mr G. Raff and ask to speak to Mrs L.E. Phant." The telephone number to call back was of course, that of the London Zoo.

A person who plays a prank is called a prankster.
