posse noun
- a group of people who have come together for the same purpose
- in the past, a group of men in the US who were brought together to catch a criminal
- slang for a group of friends
(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
--- Posse originally referred to the common-law authority of a county sheriff or other law officer to conscript any able-bodied males to help keep the peace or to pursue criminals. It has its origins in English common law, but is generally obsolete. It survives in America however, where it is the law enforcement equivalent of summoning the militia for military purposes.
The term derives from the Latin posse comitatūs, "force of the county", and was used in English beginning in the late 16th century. It was shortened to posse in the mid 17th century. While the original meaning refers to a group of citizens assembled by the authorities to deal with an emergency (such as suppressing a riot or pursuing felons), posse is also used to describe any group of people who come together for a common purpose.
Today's younger generation has meanwhile adopted the word to refer to a group of friends (I'll be back later. I'm going to hang out downtown with my posse). Other terms one might hear young people call their friends include "my crew", "my homies/hommies" and "my gang". These are the people who "have your back", which means those who look out for your best interests or support you.
