WORD ORIGIN

Ponder (circa 1330) stems from the Latin "ponderare," meaning to consider something, and further from "ponderis," literally to weigh.

Imagine for a moment if some of the world's great thinkers had not "pondered." Perhaps Einstein would have overlooked the key to his theory of relativity. Maybe Newton would have simply eaten the apple that fell from the tree instead of thinking about how it got to the ground.

On the other hand, sometimes spontaneous decisions change the world. The American civil rights activist Rosa Parks' on-the-spot decision in 1955 to remain seated in a bus for whites only sparked a protest that climaxed with the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Some 50 years later, the U.S. has its first African-American president.

For the average person though, pondering is not of such historical significance. We might ponder whether the colour of that new car should be blue or red or if the 08:20 train to Paddington would be less crowded than the 07:45. And some of us might think about things like:

- Why didn't Tarzan ever have a beard?

- Why do we send shipments by car and cargo by ships?

- Why is abbreviation such a long word?

- If nothing sticks to Teflon, how do they stick Teflon on the pan?
