WORD ORIGIN
The term plonk originated in Australia and is thought to be a disparaging (herabsetzend) alteration of blanc, as in vin blanc or white wine.

Some sources believe the term came about during World War I when soldiers from various British Empire countries had contact with French troops. Because they only spoke English, troops like those from Australia created their own words from foreign languages that they were exposed to.

The phrase plonk did not gain popularity in Britain until the 1950s when ordinary British people began to drink wine.
