phablet noun
- a smartphone having a screen which is intermediate in size between that of a typical smartphone and a tablet computer
(Oxford English Dictionary)
--- The term phablet is a blend of phone and tablet. As defined on Dictionary.com, a phablet is a mobile device that combines the features of a smartphone and a tablet computer and is larger than a typical smartphone but not as large as a typical small tablet. In another words, it's somewhere in between.
The technology industry likes the use of portmanteaus - or blends as they are commonly called now - because they provide an easy and clever way to create words for new devices or services. Here are a few other examples:
- webinar = a blend of web and seminar that describes an educational, informative or instructional presentation that is made available online, usually as either video or audio with slides
- netiquette = a blend of Internet and etiquette to describe an informal set of rules for social interaction on the "net"
- emoticon = a blend of emotion and icon that describes a representation of a facial expression such as :-) (representing a smile), formed by various combinations of keyboard characters and used in electronic communications to convey the writer’s feelings or intended tone.
malware = a blend of malicious and software to describe software used to disrupt computer operation, gather sensitive information or gain access to private computer systems
