WORD ORIGIN
Perturb(ed) likely originated from the Old French perturber (14th century) by way of the Latin perturbare, meaning to confuse, disorder or disturb (per = through + turbare = disturb, confuse). Perturbare itself comes from turbo, turbinis (genitive), which means vortex or hurricane. In turn, turbo is related to turba, turbae by way of the Greek tyrbe, both of which mean confusion or crowd.
While perturbed can mean being worried about something very serious, the word is more often used in the context of less important, but annoying things.
The New York Times published an article about how people manage situations that perturb them on a day-to-day basis. Numerous readers responded with examples of their own frustration and how they deal with them. One reader, irritated that a colleague helped himself to the biscuits she brought to work each day, finally replaced them with dog biscuits that had the appearance of real biscuits. That brought a quick end to the biscuit stealing.
