But that was war. Just about all he could find in its favor was that it paid well and liberated children from the PERNICIOUS influence of their parents.

pernicious
adjective

- having a very harmful effect or influence

(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

Etymology: Pernicious is from the Middle French "pernicious" (13th century - modern French = pernicieux) and directly from the Latin "perniciosus" meaning destructive and "pernicies," which refers to destruction, death, ruin (per = completely + necis = violent death).

A Google search of the adjective pernicious reveals that there are a lot of pernicious things in the world. Some believe television has a pernicious influence for instance, a point that is hard to argue when one channel surfs these days. And much can be said for the idea that humans have had a pernicious impact on the environment, even though there are some who try to debunk such claims.

Pernicious software? The San Francisco Examiner writes, "The fact or story that new PCs have been infected by pernicious software is all over the globe." It's interesting to note that such software is usually called "malicious software" or malware for short. The difference is that malicious means deliberately harmful while pernicious does not always infer an intent to cause damage.

Pernicious medical condition? A condition called pernicious anaemia is a blood disorder caused when the body does not make enough red blood cells due to a lack of vitamin B12.

Pernicious language? In the novel The Prince Of Tides, a young man from the southern U.S. meets four boys from New York City in college, whom he describes as using "rapid-fire speech that seemed like some alien, pernicious language to me."

Pernicious music? Today we laugh about it, but people once thought Elvis Presley and The Beatles had a pernicious influence on society, particularly on young people. Those who grew up to the sights and sounds of gyrating hips, guitars and salad-bowl haircuts likely disagree.
