A pentathlon is a contest featuring five different events. The name is derived from Greek "pente" (five) and "athlon" (competition). The first pentathlon was documented as part of the Ancient Olympic Games in Greece. Five events were contested over one day, starting with the long jump, javelin and discus throw, followed by the stadion (a short foot race) and wrestling.

Pentathletes were considered to be among the most skilled athletes. Their training was often part of military service. Each of the five events in was thought to be useful in war or battle. With the revival of the modern Olympic Games, the pentathlon returned in two formats.

The athletics pentathlon was a modern variation on the original events, with competition in five track and field events. This has since been discontinued and replaced by the heptathlon, which involves seven track and field events. The king of all Olympic events is the decathlon, a two-day, ten-discipline competition in which the winner is usually crowned the "world's greatest athlete."

The modern pentathlon, invented by Pierre de Coubertin (father of the Modern Olympics), is a variation on the military aspect of the Ancient pentathlon. It focuses on the skills that were once required by late 19th century soldiers, with competitions in shooting, swimming, fencing, equestrian riding and cross-country running.
