WORD ORIGIN

The Japanese electronics company Casio developed one of the first handheld computers, the Casio PF-3000, which was released to the market in 1983. The first handheld to really get the attention of the market was the Apple Newton. John Sculley, then CEO of Apple, is credited with creating the term personal digital assistant, or PDA, when he introduced the Newton at an electronics trade fair in 1992.

The Newton enjoyed little success and was eventually overshadowed by other products such as the Palm Pilot and Blackberry. The first PDAs relied on touchscreens and a stylus to enter data. The basic applications included appointment calendars, calculator functions, to-do lists, address books and games.

Products like the Blackberry, which is designed for business professionals, have full keyboards and scroll wheels. They offer expanded applications such as e-mail, Internet browsing, office applications and other advanced features. Mobile phone manufacturers offer similar features for users who don't want to carry around two devices. The Blackberry is also available as a mobile phone.

Apart from personal digital assistant, PDA has a variety of rather dry and uninteresting technical meanings such as programmable device array, post-detection amplifier and physical device address.

And then there is public display of affection. This is a typically bureaucratic term that describes when two people show affection for each other in a public place. It can cover anything from simply holding hands to passionate kissing. While it may sound silly to some, PDA is "not authorised" in some parts of the world. Many schools have rules against PDA for instance. In some countries where the Muslim religion is predominant, PDA is discouraged and in some cases is illegal.
