WORD ORIGIN

One can only guess at the origin of the word "pooper," but a good place to start is "nincompoop," which means a disagreeable person. This odd word is thought to be a mutation of the Latin term "non compos mentis," meaning "not of sound mind." This theory has never been proven however, leaving most etymology experts to believe that it is merely a nonsense word.

What is likely is that the word "pooper," which among other things refers to a silly, foolish or stupid person, derived from "nincompoop" since they share a common meaning. Thus a party pooper is a person who, through their disagreeable personality or attitude, ruins other people's fun.

A person in a train who tells others to keep quiet because they are making a lot of noice might be accused of being a party pooper, as would someone who always has something negative to say during a discussion or in response to other people's comments.

Party pooper can also refer in a teasing way to someone who refuses to participate in an activity, even though it might be for good reason. In this case, it expresses disappointment in a good-natured way because others really want the person to participate (Come on John, don't be a party pooper!).

A person can be accused of being a party pooper through other expressions as well:

- he rained on my parade

- he took all the fun out of it

- he put a damper on it

- he burst my balloon

- he stole my thunder
