Did you
know?

out in left field, came out of left field (US)
idiom

- If you say that someone or something has come out of left field or is out in left field, you mean that they are untypical, unusual, or strange in some way.

Collins Dictionary

---
This American expression stems from baseball. When a team takes to the pitch (field in U.S. English), it places three players in the so-called outfield: one in right field, one in centre field and one in left field.

Why left field is associated with the concept of a unusual or strange is unclear though. As one story goes, a psychiatric institute was once located directly outside the Chicago Cubs baseball stadium behind the left field area. Being out in left field thus implied that someone was a bit "crazy."

Baseball, that most American of sports, has given the English language enough idioms to justify publishing an entire book. Here is a small sample:

- cover one's bases/cover all the bases = to be prepared for any situation (Make sure you cover your bases before going into that meeting today.)

- curve ball = something unexpected or surprising (She threw me a curve ball when she told she me was getting a divorce.)

- ballpark = an estimate (I don't need the detailed costs. Just give me a ballpark figure.)

- heavy hitter = a powerful person (We invited some heavy hitters to the seminar.)
