OMG abbreviation
- oh my God! Oh my gosh!
(Oxford English Dictionary)
--- The news that the folks at the Oxford English Dictionary added OMG to its world famous reference work probably has some language purists shouting OMG themselves in frustration. No longer reserved for teenagers hanging out in Internet chat forums, OMG and other so-called initialisms are making their way into the language, whether we like it or not.
After all, dictionaries like the Oxford standard are full of abbreviations, from aka (also known as) to FYI (for your information). And with around 168 million Google hits, who can argue with the inclusion of OMG? Oxford also points out that the first quotation for OMG is in a personal letter from 1917, so it's not really new.
Other Internet slang entries that can be found in the Oxford include:
- LOL = laughing out loud
- IMHO = in my humble opinion
- BFF = best friends forever
