Octogenarian stems from the French octogénaire (aged 80) and further from the Latin octogenarius (containing 80), which is formed from octo = eight + genaria = ten times. It was first used as an adjective in the late 18th century.

Although some of these terms are seldom used, below is a list of other age groups by decades:

- denarian = someone between 10 and 19

- vicenarian = a person in their twenties
