noun phrase

- a family consisting of two parents and their children, but not including aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc.

(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

---
Despite its ominous sound, nuclear family is simply a term for a family made up of two parents and their children. It derives from "nucleus," meaning the core or centre of something (from the Latin nucleus, the kernel, and nucula, little nut).

Of course every family, even nuclear ones, can "go nuclear" from time to time (to go berserk or crazy). This is what some linguists do when they hear people, particularly Americans, pronounce the word as "nucular."

Other linguists view this as a normal evolution of the language. They call it "metathesis," which is the switching of two adjacent sounds. One way to think about it is going from "nook le yer" to "nook ye ler."

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary says that "nucular enjoys widespread use among educated speakers including scientists, lawyers, professors, congressmen, U.S. cabinet members, and at least one U.S. president and one vice president." Not to mention that this pronunciation is becoming more common among British and Canadian speakers.
