Did you know?
niche market noun
- a small area of trade within the economy, often involving specialized products
(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
--- WORD ORIGIN
Niche, pronounced "neesh", is borrowed from the French niche, the Italian nicchia (niche or nook) and nicchio (seashell) and perhaps further from the Latin mitulus (mussel), although the change from "m" to "n" has never been fully explained.
As a stand-alone word, niche has several definitions:
- A recess in a wall, such as for holding a statue or urn. - A cranny, hollow, or crevice, as in rock. - A situation or activity specially suited to a person's interests, abilities, or nature (she found her niche in life). - The function or position of an organism or population within an ecological community or the particular area within a habitat occupied by an organism.
A niche then is something specific and with a narrow focus. Thus a niche market is one that involves specialized products or services or targets a specific market segment. Self-service dog wash shops are a good example. As one shop owner explains it, the service "is simply a launderette for dogs. We offer professional grooming facilities, provide customers with the supplies and equipment they need to wash their own dog, then we clean up the hairy mess."
