---
In his 1968 book "New Language of Politics", American journalist William Safire claims that the expression "bang for the buck" was coined in 1954 by then U.S. Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson.

In reference to the policy of so-called "massive retaliation" developed by the U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, which called for an all-out nuclear response, Wilson was quoted as saying this strategy would provide "a bigger bang for a buck".

The "bang" in this context refers to weapons or fire power and "buck" means money (buck has long been colloquial for the U.S. dollar). As used in this expression, bang meanwhile refers to value or worth. Another way to put it, would be to simply say "to get more for your money."
