WORD ORIGIN
Mockumentary combines the words mock and documentary to describe a satirical or parody-based documentary film. This is Spinal Tap, a 1984 mockumentary, is considered by many to be responsible for the birth of this film genre. The film follows a really awful, semi-fictitious heavy metal rock band on a comeback tour in the United States that of course never really occurs.

More recently, British-born comedian Sacha Baron Cohen released his mockumentary “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”. In the film, Cohen plays Borat Sagdiyev, Kazakhstan's sixth most famous man and a leading journalist from the state-run television network, who travels from his home in Kazakhstan to the U.S. to make a documentary.

Borat created a controversy after some people interviewed for the film sued Cohen, claiming they thought they were participating in a real documentary.
