"Several surveys suggest that MILLENNIALS aren't motivated by the same factors as previous generations, such as a job for life, but instead value a good work life balance and a sense of purpose beyond financial success."

millennials noun
- people who were born in the late 1980s to the 1990s (American Heritage Dictionary)
The word millennials is a demographic term that roughly describes people, especially those born and living in North America, who reached maturity at around the turn of the 21st century. And since it's a demographic expression, not a scientific term, there is no "cut-off" date that allows us to officially place someone in this group.
That's why the term is used mainly by marketing professionals and less in conversations between "normal" people. Still, in response to the question "When were you born?", someone in this demographic group could simply say, "I'm a millennial." You could thus avoid revealing your actual date of birth or year of birth during a conversation.
Millennials are also referred to as Generation Y, the demographic successor to (surprise!) Generation X, which is the group born after the post–World War II baby boom (1960s to 1980s) in western countries. Generally speaking, millennials are characterized as being more liberal, socially-conscious and having a high Internet affinity.
The word millennial derives of course from the Latin millennium - 1,000 years - which originates from mille, or thousand.
