Most dictionaries define matchmaking as bringing two people together with the aim of promoting a romantic relationship. This was the original and still primary definition. However, matchmaking can be applied to any situation in which people with common interests are introduced in order to form a relationship, be it for romance, business or hobbies.
The business world now has matchmaking events, also referred to as "networking." The online gaming industry uses the term to describe getting people together who want to play the same game.
Still, matchmaking is first and foremost about personal relationships and marriage. Creativity has no limits when it comes to matchmaking events. The London Science Museum held an "I Smell Love" seminar to discuss how people can pick out their partner for life based on their aroma. This was followed by a "sniff-dating" session in which participants created a smell profile from a selection of natural scents. They were then encouraged to circulate to discover if a smell-match could reveal a potential partner.
A group of lonely Welsh dairy farmers began putting their pictures on milk bottles in an attempt to find love. Iwan Jones, the originator of the idea, said the countryside could be "a hard place to find a date." He came up with the idea for the rural matchmaking venture after realising a large number of Welsh farmers were single. On his own milk bottle sticker, Mr Jones lists his interests as "supporting Wrexham Football Club and listening to music". He said: "It's just a bit of a laugh really but if an attractive young lady contacts me I certainly won't turn her away."
