Manger is a Middle English word that stems from the Old French "mangeoire" (from mangier) and the Modern French "manger," meaning to eat. This derived further from the Latin manducare, to chew. The manger scene traditionally depicts Joseph and Mary receiving visitors, including several local shepherds and a visiting group of Eastern astrologers or mystics known as the Three Wise Men.
Jesus is depicted in a manger filled with straw, a symbol of his future role as a sacrificial Lamb. Surrounding the manger are a number of domestic animals and the shepherds who tend them. While most manger scenes use plastic figures, some organizations and churches use real people and animals.
