Manger is a Middle English word that stems from the Old French "mangeoire" (from mangier) and the Modern French "manger," meaning to eat. This derived further from the Latin manducare, to chew. The original meaning referred to an open box, often made of wood, used to feed or water animals. In modern English this is called a "trough" (pronounced liked "trawf"). The second definition, a baby bed or crib, stems from the story of the birth of Jesus Christ in an animal stall in Bethlehem.

With Christmas fast approaching, Christians around the world will display manger scenes in their gardens and churches in celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Also referred to as the Nativity (from the Latin "nativitas," birth), it is one of the essential elements of this Christian holiday.

Although there has been speculation over the actual season of Jesus' birth, modern Christians have assigned December 25 as the symbolic date of Christ's arrival on Earth. The manger scene traditionally depicts Joseph and Mary receiving visitors, including several local shepherds and a visiting group of Eastern astrologers or mystics known as the Three Wise Men.

Jesus is depicted in a manger filled with straw, a symbol of his future role as a sacrificial Lamb. Surrounding the manger are a number of domestic animals and the shepherds who tend them. While most manger scenes use plastic figures, some organizations and churches use real people and animals.

Usage note: Be careful when writing the word "manager" to make sure it doesn't end up as "manger." Today's spell checkers are not smart enough to catch this mistake. If it does happen, do not despair. A quick search of Internet news sources reveals a surprising number of misspellings even by renowned newspapers and magazines.
