makeover noun
make over verb
- an overall treatment to improve something or make something more attractive or appealing
(American Heritage Dictionary)
--- Makeover is a compound word comprised of make (to create, to change from one form into another) and over, the latter of which is used in the sense of completely through or end to end. Thus a makeover refers to completely changing something.
The term was first used in beauty and cosmetics to describe a course of treatments and hair styling designed to change one's look or appearance. It is meanwhile applied in a more general sense to denote a fundamental change to something with the aim of improving it.
A company might carry out a makeover of its product line to increase sales for instance. A football trainer might feel pressured to makeover the team's defence if the opposition is scoring too many goals. Or a website could undergo a makeover to make it more attractive and draw more visitors.
And sometimes people are just unhappy with their appearance or image and decide it's time for a makeover.
