WORD ORIGIN

Lozenge is borrowed from the Old French lozenge, which described quadrilateral (diamond-shaped) objects like windowpanes and small square cakes made from herbs. Losenge is probably pre-Roman and may stem from lausa, an Iberian term for a flat stone. Lausa is related to the Spanish (losa), Catalan (llosa), Portuguese (lousa) and Italian (lozanga). It's also found in the Latin lausiae lapides, stone chips.

Lozenge was originally a term used in heraldry, which involves matters related to the duties and responsibilities of "officers of arms." These are individuals appointed by sovereign families to manage genealogical records, official ceremonies and the coat of arms. The lozenge is a diamond-shaped image on a shield or coat of arms in which family or personal insignias are placed.

Lozenge is also a type of rhombus, a four-sided polygon with sides of equal length (equilateral). The rhombus is often called a diamond, after the diamonds suit in playing cards. In World War I, the German army developed a camouflage for their aircraft that used a lozenge pattern made up of a series of irregularly shaped polygons. The lozenge is also used on public roadways in the United States to mark a specific lane for a particular use. The lane is usually painted with a lozenge at regular intervals, and signage is installed to indicate the restrictions on using the lane (typically referred to as diamond lanes).

Finally, a lozenge is a type of medicinal tablet held in the mouth where it dissolves and slowly releases the active ingredients. Most lozenges are used for sore throats and coughing. Because these tablets were originally diamond-shaped, they acquired the name lozenge. Lozenges meanwhile come in all shapes and sizes and contain various types of medications.
