--- WORD ORIGIN
Lido, the British term for a public swimming and sunning facility, stems from the name of the Italian reef island Lido, which includes a famous beach resort. The word lido comes from the Latin litus, meaning "shore."
The 1930s was the golden age of new lidos in England. Swimming became very popular, leading local councils across the country to build around 170 lidos. The trend subsided when foreign travel became affordable for the middle class. Instead of local lidos, which went of out fashion, families headed for places like Majorca, the Canary Islands or Portugal.
Nevertheless, lidos that are still in operation like the Saltdean Lido in Sussex, Tooting Bec Lido in South London and Jesus Green Swimming Pool in Cambridge, have loyal followers. Surbiton Lagoon and Peckham Rye are two that have closed.
In 2005, the English Heritage, which is the arm of government responsible for protecting and promoting England's historic environment, published a report that addressed the past, present and future of the country's lidos. Since then there has been a small lido revival that has resulted in the renovation and/or reopening of several facilities like the London Fields Lido in Hackney and the Droitwich Spa Lido.
