liaison officer noun phrase
- someone who helps groups to work effectively with each other
(Cambridge Dictionaries Online)
--- What do cooking and helping people work together have in common? Not much, other than the word liaison. This word stems from the Latin ligatio (a binding, like a ligament) by way of the French "liaison," which originally referred to a thickening agent for sauces. The sense of intimate relations is from the early 19th century. The military sense of cooperation between branches or allies also developed around this period.
Liaison officers, often abbreviated as LNO or simply called liaisons, can be found in a variety of fields. Government is one of the more common areas, particularly the military, foreign service departments and the intelligence services, all of which must closely coordinate their activities with a broad range of organizations in order to function effectively.
Many police departments have various liaison officers meanwhile. Their primary purpose is to ensure communication with community groups and to provide the public with points of contact to discuss issues and concerns.
School liaison officers are also becoming popular as a way to facilitate communication with parents and other outside groups that are involved in education. Most colleges have student liaison officers who represent the interests of the student body.
