legit adjective
- conforming to the rules; legal
(Oxford English Dictionary)
--- Legit is a colloquial, shortened version of "legitimate," a term that stems from the Medieval Latin "legitimatus" by way of the Middle French "legitimer," which essentially means "lawful."
Legit and legitimate are used in several different contexts such as:
- being in compliance with the law; lawful (We operate a legit business)
- being in accordance with established or accepted patterns and standards (We carry out legit advertising practices)
- based on logical reasoning; reasonable (That was a legit complaint)
- authentic; genuine (Yes, it's a legit Rolex)
One of the first uses of the term legit involves "legit theatre," a phrase that dates back to the Licensing Act of 1737, which restricted "serious" theatre performances to the two patent theatres licensed to perform "spoken drama" after the English Restoration in 1662. Other theatres were permitted to show comedy, pantomime or melodrama, but were ranked as "illegitimate theatre".
