Couple's Success in Music Management Began as a LARK

"The initial idea of buying the team was a LARK, but what I started thinking was, 'People do things all the time that they have no business doing.' That's how entrepreneurs make their living. They do things people don't expect them to do. And it was really just a matter of saying, 'Well, why not?' "

verb

(American Heritage Dictionary)

---
Lark, as in a joke or mischief, has been used in this context since the mid-1900s. One theory regarding its origin is the Yorkshire dialect word "lake," meaning to amuse oneself. The Yorkshire pronunciation of lake - laik - was probably interpreted by others as "lark."

Lark is used in the following expressions:

- as a lark = synonymous with the the expression "as a joke" (It started as lark, but then turned into a career.)

- on a lark = used to suggest beginning an activity with no planning and no serious goal in mind (After chatting online, we decided on a lark to meet for dinner.)

- lark about/around = to behave in a silly or playful way (He was larking about on the front steps when he fell down and broke his foot.)

- this...lark = a way of referring to an activity that is not enjoyable (I've had enough of this cleaning and cooking lark.)

- Lark is also short for skylark = a small brown bird known for its beautiful singing.

As a verb, skylark means to play actively, frolic.
