--- Women's rights have undoubtedly come a long way throughout the 20th century so it is perhaps surprising that 68 percent of women said that they would love to be a Victorian LADY OF LEISURE.

lady of leisure noun
- a woman with no paid employment, normally financed by husband or family to entertain herself with leisure activities
--- WORD ORIGIN
There was a time, particularly during the Victorian era in England, when many women strived to be a lady of leisure. Such women usually "married into money" and spent most of their time engaged in leisure activities: having tea with friends, shopping, reading. Married women with little money usually toiled with housework and raised the children.
Younger single women might have worked in a garment factory for pennies, dreaming about one day finding a rich man in order to become a lady of leisure. Able to dress in the latest fashions, eat at the best restaurants and have nothing but time on their hands, the Victorian lady of leisure was the envy of society. With such a large gap between the rich and the poor, the lady of leisure became a status symbol.
This expression developed a negative connotation over time, due in large part to women's emancipation. In many societies, women can now choose to pursue a career. They happily do so, oftentimes balancing work and family. There is also an increasing number of middle class families who can afford luxury items. Thus the lady of leisure is not the status symbol that she once was.
