knuckle-dusters noun phrase
- a metal weapon which is worn over the knuckles and is intended to increase the injuries caused when hitting a person
(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
--- Combatants have always looked for an advantage over their opponents, whether on the battlefield, on the streets or in the ring. Knuckle-dusters are considered one of the best close-quarters weapons. They have a bloody history dating back to the Ancient Greek Olympic games around 2,700 years ago.
The Greeks would wrap their hands in preparation for boxing events. They were made of thin leather approximately 3 to 4 meters long and were softened with grease or oil. By the 4th century BC, boxers instead started to wear a kind of glove that was already formed from leather straps.
Modern knuckle-dusters, made of steel or brass, were popular in the United States during the American Civil War with soldiers often making their own from melted bullets. During World War I and World War II, knuckle-dusters and knuckle-knives were used by both American and British soldiers.
Most knuckle-dusters made today have rounded rings to increase the impact of the blows. Some have spikes, sharp points and cutting edges that are designed to cause serious injury.
Note: Knuckle-dusters are illegal in most countries!
