---
The word killjoy is self-explanatory: it describes someone who likes to "kill" the "joy" of others. Britain boasts two notable killjoys.

(1) Ebeneezer Scrooge, Charles Dickens' fictional spoilsport and protagonist in his famous novel "A Christmas Carol," despises the holidays, hates being nice and yells "Bah humbug!" at anyone who says "Merry Christmas!" to him. In a dream he is visited by the Christmas spirit who convinces him to have a change of heart and shed his killjoy image.

(2) Real-life killjoy Oliver Cromwell was a 17th century English political and military leader best known for his involvement in turning England into a commonwealth. He was also famous for his Puritan views, which led him to close down pubs, bordellos and race courses. He is credited with initiating the move to ban Christmas celebrations during the 1640s, which lasted until the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
