(Oxford Dictionary)

Wakefulness, in particular while others are sleeping, is expressed by the Latin word vigilia. One definition of "keep vigil" comes from Christian religious ceremonies held at night.

Especially on the night before Christmas and the night before Easter, believers might attend midnight services. This goes back to the early times of Christianity, when religious rituals had to be performed at night so as to hide them from the authorities.

Although some vigils are religious, many people think of the military when they hear the term, because it is common for a guard at a military base to stand guard or keep watch all night.

A slightly different type of vigil involves a stationary, peaceful demonstration, typically without speeches. People might hold a candlelight vigil, for example, when someone is killed by a bombing or shooting in a public place, as a way to remember, honour and mourn the victim.

Variations of the expression include "keep a/the vigil" or "stand vigil".
